History of Aazhimala, Kovalam

Most famous among the stories about Aazhimala is related to the vanavasa (forest life) period of Pandavas. The Pandavas during their vanavasa, while passing through sea shore become tired and stayed for some time at the beach. When Panchali was thirsty and when asked for water, Bheemasena digs with his foot back on water flowing rock. Pandavas drink water collected at the dig made by Bheemasena. The dig still remains in the rock and the place is called colloquially as Kinnikkuzhi.

There is also a famous story related to Jambhava. Jambhava person in Ramayana, during the "Tretha Yuga" used to stay at a sea shore cave for meditation. The cave was near to Aazhimala Temple. Still there is some remaining of some natural cave near to sea shore, and the place is locally called as Charupara.

Still there are lots of facts remains as unknown stories related to Aazhimala.

Aesthetic Beauty of Aazhimala beach

If we compare the heavenly beauty of the beach, there are really some unique attractions which extremely differentiate Aazhimala from other tourist beaches. One of the most amazing attraction is its seasonal visual change. I must explain about it in detail. If you comes to visit the beach during the tourist season, that is January to May, there will be a long sandy beach with wide area of about 100 to 300 meter in width between sea and the actual shore land. Really no words to explain the beauty and its core attractiveness in the period. And when rainy season starts with June, the sea waves will swallow the entire sandy area and will hit strongly at rocky shore. It is not at all imaginable when the powerful wind waves hits on shore rocks and jumps up in huge heights during the off season. The beach will become much more noisy and dangerous with the strong surface waves when more rain water reaches into the sea. Once you have visited Aazhimala beach during the tourist season and if you comes back in rainy season, (off season ) I bet you can't even identify some of the beach spots. I am sure and stick on my bet because 99 percentage of my friends and guests visited same spot during different season really failed to identify some the beach spots.
